Compilation problems on Slackware 8.0

I recently installed Slackware 8. I endeavored to use the
stock gnome installation but found I was getting occasional
segfaults. I decided to try an install from tarballs but
when I get to compile gnome-libs, It fails with the
following:

I'm running Slackware 8.0 with gcc 2.95.3 and kernel 2.4.5. Any ideas?
