Hi,
The tasklist should not show the gmc and panel. Are you sure you are using
a GNOME compliant window manager (sawfish, icewm etc)? If so, I might
suggest you try deleteing  the  .gnome directory in your home directory and
restart GNOME, it might clean up your setup.
Another problem could be that you start GNOME before the window manager,
that will also cause this.

Also since you use so many X-terms,might a suggest that you take a look at
Powershell: http://powershell.pdq.net/
