I believe the number of letters LILO prints out are indicative of the
problem lilo is having.  If I remember right, LIL means that the kernel
cannot be loaded (Im probably wrong about what it means, but Im pretty
certain that the number of letters means something).

Are you perhaps using a drive that is really large?  I had fits getting my
Linux box at home set up to dual boot on a 17 gigger.  I had to make my
first partition fit within the 1024 cylinder mark, then make a win98
partition, then another Linux partition, and finally my swap partitions;)
