Ahhh, I get why this is happening

This is because the panel never gets the leave event. Hmm, maybe an autohide
panel should just run a timer all the time which would queue hides if it
noticed the cursor outside of a panel.

The solution for panel menus doesn't scale to internal applet menus
unfortunately
