This is because the icon can be supplied by the application. If you
run KDE apps, their icons will be shown instead of the window. API
for GNOME apps to do this will be added to the devel version soon.
There is an item for some type of visual difference in the tasklist's
TODO list though.

They can be disabled...

This doesn't seem to happen for me...

The HEAD branch of the panel has support for this, so the 1.1.x
tasklist should do this.
