Beg your pardon, I'm already familiar with various levels of sound
quality, and have no sound quality problems compared to direct /dev/dsp.
You are having a problem that other people are not, so telling everyone
else that "esd sucks just because" is inaccurate.

Um, this has to be your sound card picking up EMF from the other parts of
the computer (I know because I get noise whenever I move my mouse).
Try adjusting volume settings, etc.
