Ok, we had a problem in gnome_init() which assumed that the HOME
environment variable was set. This is not the case when gdm is started
from init(1).

Miguel just committed a getpwent() fallback for getenv() in libgnome,
which solves the problem.

Please try the current code gnome-libs/gdm.
