Unless you're logging into X as root, you don't want xhost commands to
be executed as root; they should be executed as the user running the X
session.  

I don't think $prefix/etc/gdm/Sessions/Default should be a separate file; it 
should be a symlink to $prefix/etc/gdm/Sessions/Gnome.  

Do you have a ~/.gnomerc?  That will be
executed instead of etc/gnomerc if it exists.
