I tried that but the gnomerc file doesn't seem to be executed.  I put
the commands you suggested into the Sessions/Default file (where they
were executed) and received the same 'not authorized' error message as
before.  Moving these commands to the PreSession/Default file to
guarantee that they run as root yields the error message 'Invalid
MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key'.
