Maybe you could read the ABOUT-NLS file coming with GNU gettext first
(Miguel, this isn't distributed with Gnome?).

This file tells about the infrastructure we established to get
translations for the GNU packages. We have groups and mailing lists
for all the languages and the results are IMO good. The groups are in
no many focused on GNU packages only, any package using gettext is
handled.

Some groups (e.g., the German one) also have written kind of
guidelines or little translation aids for often used words. I suggest
you look into doing something similar for other languages. There is
no need to start something similar to the translation groups just for
Gnome.
