Drag and drop protocols

Yowza! How many of these drag and drop procols *are* there for X? Does
anyone have an overview of what the ICCCM requires, what the Unix98
standard requires, what Gnome uses, and what KDE uses?

What needs to be done to make all these standards play nicely? Is it just a
simple matter of Gtk+ programming, or is there something fundamentally
intractable about the problem? I'd greatly appreciate any pointers to
appropriate documentation.
