I don't know what "GDK keymap" is, but if it's possible for Māori, I'd
suggest you to use XKB mechanism for creating keymaps, since you
would be able to use it in all X apps.

You should check translation status pages at
 http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gtp/status/gnome-2.6/xx/index.html
(choose a language code of your preference instead of "xx", eg. "cs"
for one of the most complete translations, or "kw" for one of the
least complete translations -- there, you can pick up POT files, which
you need to translate)

Once you provide a single translation, you'll get your own pages by
using code "mi" instead of "xx".

There, you'll notice a couple of "categories".  There're
"developer-libs", which make up GNOME Development Platform and
"desktop" which makes up GNOME Desktop. 

These two together make what is officially called "GNOME Desktop &
Development Platform", or simply "GNOME".  You'll most certainly want
to translate these first.

There's another relevant category "proposed" which consists of
modules/programs which *might* get into GNOME Desktop one of these
days.

Other categories are composed of miscellaneous software which adds to
the GNOME Desktop, and sometimes even overlaps with it.  It's usually
up to the translator and their resources to choose what they will
translate out of it.

So, I hope this is at least a bit useful. Generally, start out with
developer-libs, and switch over to desktop.

Among developer-libs, particularly important are gtk+, libgnome,
and libgnomeui (I sure missed some, but most other programs reuse
strings from these).
