gettext 0.12.1 and gnumeric are not too friendly to each other lately,
due to the UTF-8 strings in the latter. The solution is not to downgrade
gettext in your machine, but add support for --from-code to intltool
if gettext 0.12 is detected. I'm currently using a modified
intltool-update which unconditionally adds --from-code=UTF-8 to the
xgettext call, but it should be able to detect if the option is
available, otherwise, we'd make GNOME depend on a quite recent version
of gettext.
