Re: Questions

While I realize a lot of UNIX guys haven't used MacOS a lot, there is a lot of
research essentially saying that edge-flipping is a lot less productive than having
a menu on the top edge. Besides, it should be an OPTION to use either way.
Personally, I don't have edge-flipping on becuase i end up throwing the mouse off
of of my windows and it hits the edge (and then woudl flip) too often. I used to
swear at WMs that didn't use edge flip, until I found "ALT-1, ALT-2, ALT-x" religion
and can edge-flip SOOO much faster with those shortcuts than with any mouse action.

Of course, one could say the same thing about keyboard hotkeys for menus, except
that about 1 in 10 GNOME apps actually have the keyboard shortcuts active.

As to Ben Ford's comment of:

> Ever used Bash? ;) That is what the tab is for!

Astute point, and BASH is certainly a really good shell. The first thing I did on
my MacOSX box at home was donwload Bash so I coudl actually use the command shell.
So yeah, I realize that tab exists. However, if you have ever used Cisco IOS, you
will see just how bad Bash is compared to a real command-line syntax created before
1980 (Actually, I don't know how old IOS is, but I think it was made after that, and
I think bash was made after that, too, but with the Same Old Syntax grafted on to it
<wink>).

Tabbing in bash is like IOS, except that it gives no context, and the command set it
still pretty obscure. To use a command that you don't know, you have to first do an
"apropos", then man that command, then slowly and meticulously go through the
options, and god forbid you type in something incorrectly (it won't show you where
you are wrong). And if you do type something incvorrectly, you could seriously
screw things up.

Why not have a command parser that has commands that map to a modern OS, that give
interactive help, that immediately shows possiblities when "?" is pressed, etc.etc.
etc. There are so many ways that the CLI could be improved to the point where it
would be powerful for both newbies AND power users, and could be used in a more
"natural language" environment, like with using speech recognition.

Sorry, but you are not going to soon be saying, "computer, 2 to beam up" with Bash
around. It would look more like, "bmm -u 2 ./me ./you" or something like that.
