Re: [gnome-flashback] GNOME Flashback 3.26+

Hi,

2017-04-06 23:25 GMT+03:00 Khurshid Alam <khurshid alam linuxmail org>:

Hi Albert,

is anyone using / testing GNOME Flashback 3.24? I would like to receive some feedback to know on what things I should focus.

I can test if there is a proper PPA for it. The daily build PPA (https://is.gd/VBIlKO) currently building from master has the version 3.25 !.
Not sure where it is getting that version number (recipe is using {debversion}~{time})

That PPA was created to test latest upstream changes. Maybe it might be good idea to create PPA for last stable release...

Are you using 17.04? Or on what ubuntu versions you will / want test?

- Do we have new regressions compared to previous versions?

Weather-applet doesn't work. It doesn't show any weather data.

More info please. It seems to work for me with 3.25, but since there has not been changes to weather applet that should change nothing.

Heavy screen flickering for csd windows under compiz.

Again, more info needed, but sounds like something that is not GNOME Flashback problem. Or is it gtk-window-decorator only bug?

Still testing for more.....

Thanks!

- What are most biggest, most important problems / bugs to you?

1. Window resize area for csd windows under compiz. To tackle the problem, Mate give us mate-compiz plugin which uses transparent resize areas.
May be you could do the same? As of now csd windows under compiz is completely useless.

Link to plugin? Don't know anything about it...

Honestly I will switch to metacity if:
       a) I can disable min/max animation

There is only one animation - minimize. I don't like it too, but not sure what to do about it. I have thought about doing this:
- remove animation when compositor is not used / disabled
- create better animation for compositor, probably with option to disable it.

       b) I can use something similar to window spread (i.e compiz scale) which can spread all windows from all workspaces &
can be tied to hot corner. Very productive.

Mate's marco (fork of metacity) can do both now (window scale plugin in work-in-progress).

Link, more info? For window spread thing in marco... What version added it? Did quick look in git history and did not find anything related.

2. No GUI to change metacity theme.

Yes, this is problem...

Ideally we could create plugin for GNOME Control Center, but not sure if this happen because this requires that control center restores external plugins.

Other option might be to create GNOME Flashback Tweak tool, but one option is not enough...

3. Absence of a default global menu applet.

Is not global menu ubuntu thing?

4. When I use vnc session in remmina, I can not send keystroke (modifier + key) to other machine even
when "grab-keyborad" options is enabled. may be something to do with gnome-settings-daemon?

What version you are using? GNOME Flashback in Ubuntu for some time used unity-settings-deamon and only with 17.04 we are switching back to gnome-settings-daemon.

Also might be good to know version when it last worked.

- Does anyone use metacity with "gtk+" theme? Or everyone is still using old "metacity" themes?

Metacity with gtk+. This should be default setting. There is no way change old metacity theme through GUI.
User change their theme and then gets frustrated as their titlebar doesn't change at all. Will you please change this in GSettings?

Upstream has already gtk+ theme as default because metacity does not have any metacity themes these days... In Ubuntu we are forced to use metacity theme, because Ambiance does not have proper support for csd windows.

- Anything else?

Yes. How can add mate's new brisk menu applet (https://github.com/solus-project/brisk-menu) to panel? I installed mate-applets. But it doesn't
appear in applets window. Not sure why?

mate-panel != gnome-panel...

Also I am searching for help, there is just too many things for one developer who works only in free time. For example, gnome-applets are basically unmaintained... :(

Right. Most of them doesn't work properly. They look pretty bad as well.  Can we theme clock-applet with css?

That should be possible, yes.

With help I mean anything:
- Testing and reporting bugs.
- Writing patches. I will be happy even about small patches that fixes build warnings and/or simple deprecations. gnome-panel and gnome-applets are full of build warnings and deprecations...
- Money, either as bounty for fixing certain bugs or simply saying thank you. In case you want support me - https://www.paypal.me/muktupavels.
- Something else...

I will be happy to help. I will file bugs after bit more testing. Keep up the good work.

Ok, thanks!

Thanks.
