Hi,

Earlier, the size of the icons in the gnome-panel menu could be set by using a line of the form,

gtk-icon-sizes = panel-menu-bar=16,16:panel-menu=16,16:panel=16,16:gtk-large-toolbar=16,16:gtk-small-toolbar=16,16:gtk-button=16,16

in the "settings.ini" file under ~/.config/gtk-3.0/.

This does not seem to work any more for the gnome-panel in the gnome-flashback( metacity ) session in Ubuntu 14.04.

Can someone please suggest an alternate solution that will work in Ubuntu 14.04 to set the icon size and separation between menu items in the gnome-panel menu?

It happens because Gnome depreciated & removed gtk-icon-sizes settings from gtk-3.10.

Unfortunetely there is no such alternate solution unless you compiled GTK+ with the patch to get it back.

Exactly. You have to patch gtk+ if you want back option to set icon sizes. Or patch gnome-panel - set icon sizes you want (panel-menu-bar-object.c and panel-stock-icons.h). There is nothing else you can do about it.

Or

you can file a bug at GTK+. (for Ubuntu there is already one: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1285683)

AFAIK, Alberts restored those option as Gsettings in future branch of Gnome-panel(3.10).So we may get it back in 3.10.

This is a little bit wrong...

Only 'panel-menu' and 'panel-menu-bar' are restored as GSettings. There is still no way to change icon size for 'gtk-button', 'gtk-small-toolbar' and others and probably won't be in future too. I did this as I want make menu-bar and main-menu applets configurable.

Also at least for now sizes are limited to 16, 24, 32 or 48 px. Don't know if there was any limit previously.

And last! I wont make my work public at least for now. Probably I will do it only in one of following cases:
1) I will be gnome-panel maintainer. Then I will upload new branches for testing - gnome-panel, gnome-applets and gnome-flashback (new package that I would make).
2) Philipp starts actually to maintain gnome-panel / GNOME Flashback and show big progress to make it compatible with GNOME 3.10+. I doubt that this is going to happen, but if it will then I will publish my work for review.
3) I could make GNOME Flashback PPA.
4) I could try to patch gnome-panel in ubuntu.
5) I could start new project, but most likely I won't have enough free time to do this.

Thanks.
