You may find G_DEBUG=fatal_warnings useful for debugging these.

OK, so the easiest thing for us will be to have metacity and metacity3 packages.

Do you know why libmetacity is dependency for compiz? I found that at least one reason is to allow to use metacity themes in compiz. If this is only reason maybe this option could be removed from compiz?
