I agree with all of this. Especially since my first gnome installation was done over a 28.8 modem (and that is still what my home connection is ... I tend to cheat and download all the big stuff at work). To help move things along, I started collecting the necessary bits and pieces for creating such a document last night and will volunteer to write it. Since the release date for Gnome 1.4 has been pushed back in the last couple of days, I should have time to write something and then just incrementally update it as things change (although the package list for 1.4 seems pretty complete already).
