For someone just starting out, I'd say that a live distribution such as 
GRML or Knoppix would be the simplest way to find out about Linux. That 
gives you an opportunity to try it out without committing yourself, and it 
also gives you the chance to download ISOs and have a look at them. I 
think that GRML, in particular, is a brilliant concept, with a lot of 
interesting console software which is eminently accessible.
