Ah... that does make a lot of sense! The interface language is set to 
"System Language", which for me is English UK. However, the only other 
option is "English [en_US]", so guess I need to re-run the installer and 
include the translations - I'd deselected them to save installing a load 
of languages I don't need (or at least didn't think I needed...)
