True, usually resizing is followed by adding some sharpening and such. I
completely overlooked Image->Duplicate, so thanks! (not the first
"already there in plain sight" GIMP feature that I've overlooked).

If my only reason for duplicating the image is to prevent accidentally saving a resized/flattened version
over the original workfile, I wouldn't mind having a checkbox on the Resize dialog to do that automatically.
(For compare and contrast: the Decompose/Compose plugins [necessarily] output their results to a new image
window)
