That did help. All I actually had to do was set the environment variables mentioned there in my ~/.tschrc file. And yes, that's a cshell. Having learned it in the 70s and continued with it in Apple's classic shell - did you know there was one? - I'm too old to change.
I have created a temporary, I hope, startup script for opening files in gedit from a command line. It just scans and replaces \0x0D with \0x0A everywhere and uses the gedit tool to open the possibly altered file.
Next step is to get that Unity menu to display the menus all the time and I'd be back to Apple Classic for everything. . . . When I get home.
