Hello: I posted this two days ago to the Ubuntu Forums, but I have had no
replies; I am re-posting here, with some additional information:

After upgrading from Ubuntu 9.04 > 9.10 a few days ago, my Gedit dictionary
(1000's of saved spellings) is missing.

I have "aspell," "aspell-en," "dictionaries-common," "gnome-spell" and
"ispell" (and required dependencies) installed via Synaptic, and I also have
the Gedit "Spell Checker" plugin installed / enabled).

For whatever reason, the Gedit dictionaries in use (en.dic; en_US.dic) are
located at

/home/victoria/.config/enchant/

These dictionaries are also apparently in use (?) by Claws Mail; the spell
checking in Claws is similarly screwed up.

I replaced this dictionary with a rsnapshot (rsync) backup copy that
preceded the date of my upgrade, but every time I run save my Gedit
documents, these files (en.dic; en_US.dic) are over-written with a new,
blank file.  I also appended my spellings list into these files, with the
same result.

I noticed that I have an essentially blank directory (with one small file:
enchant.ordering), at 

/usr/share/enchant$

while the following directory contains
