I can think a couple of hacks to do the saving in the proper way
(I'd avoid saving manually since gedit would not be aware of the
state change).
Can you describe where you need 'save' ?
Ideally, the command that invokes latex compilation should first save
the current active document. I know that e.g. emacs/auctex does not
do this, but winefish (gtk), kile (KDE), winedt (W32) and textmate
(OSX) all do. I find this quite convenient.
Is there any way to change the state of the current active doc from
"unsaved" to "saved" from a plugin?
