Thanks for being patient with me.  I think I know what your problem was, 
and I think I fixed this in GDM CVS head.  Can you rebuild GDM from CVS
head, test, and let me know if it is now working for you.

I also notice that the message "Theme broken" was appearing sometimes
when the theme had this, so I fixed that too.
