Have you installed 'bootstrap/ttf-bitstream-vera'?  The other thing to 
try is to run 'fc-cache' which prepares the lists of fonts to use (check 
with 'fc-list').  Or you could set the default fonts to something else 
if you can run 'gnome-control-center' from another environment.
