I did install the ttf font pkg by bitstream and fc-list does show it
in their.
test cranium:~$ fc-list |grep Vera
Bitstream Vera Sans Mono:style=Bold
Bitstream Vera Sans:style=Oblique
Bitstream Vera Sans:style=Roman
Bitstream Vera Sans Mono:style=Oblique
Bitstream Vera Sans:style=Bold
Bitstream Vera Serif:style=Roman
Bitstream Vera Sans Mono:style=Bold Oblique
Bitstream Vera Sans:style=Bold Oblique
Bitstream Vera Sans Mono:style=Roman
Bitstream Vera Serif:style=Bold
That is why this is so confusing.

| Have you installed 'bootstrap/ttf-bitstream-vera'? The other thing
| to try is to run 'fc-cache' which prepares the lists of fonts to use
| (check with 'fc-list'). Or you could set the default fonts to
| something else if you can run 'gnome-control-center' from another
| environment.
