Re: Transferring Photos

James,

Sure. The paths to the pictures is pointing to the old directory structure in the photos database, so what you must do is either tell F-Spot to point to the new directory, or simulate the old directory structure.

1) Force the path
You can add the following parameter to the shortcut you use to start F-Spot: --photodir /home/newuser/photos
This will tell F-Spot to use the specified directory for photos

2) Create a symlink
You can create a symbolic link to the new directory. I don't know your level of knowledge about linux so I'll just say this: a symbolic link is a sort of shortcut to a folder or file. So what you need to do is create a directory that matches the home of the old user, ex:
mkdir /home/olduser
In there, you add a symbolic link to the new photos folder:
ln -s /home/newuser/photos /home/olduser/photos

Let me know if it helps.

Hi Math

Many thanks for your help.  Unfortunately the directory I have set up on the new drive is different (because the user names are different).  So I cannot get the tags and the photos to synchronise.  Is there a way round this?

Thanks in advance.

James

Hi James,

Don't know if someone answered your question before me but here it is.

Your tags and all the info on your pictures library (i.e. the catalog) are stored on a file in your home directory (the exact path I think is ~/.gnome2/f-spot/photos.db). All you have to do to import your catalog to your new installation is to copy this file to the same exact directory on the new drive. After that, you need to have the files installed in the exact same path, in other words, if you checked the "Copy pictures to the photos directory" when you imported your pictures the first time, you have to copy the ~/Photos directory to the new account. Otherwise, you need to copy the files to the new drive to the exact same paths (ex. /somedir/photos on the old drive -> /somedir/photos on the new drive).

After doing that, when you'll open F-Spot it should work.

Hope it helps!

Hi.  Hope someone can help me.

I saw the light and changed from Windows to Linux last year, using Suse 10.1; with F-Spot for my photos.  I have recently installed Suse 10.3 on a separate hard drive and am in the process of transferring all my files from the 10.1 to the 10.3 drive.  With a bit of research (and some trial and error!) I have successfully transferred my accounts, movies, family tree and all my email files, BUT I cannot get my photos with their tags to transfer.  There are over 2000 photos and to re-tag them all would be hours of work.  I can transfer the photos OR the tags but cannot get both together.  Am I missing something simple?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

James Dickin
