Maybe F-Spot could cache a file's (inode number + modification time + file
size) and if any of those are different, do a reload of the file?
It would require stat()ing all the photo files, but it sounds like that's
necessary to detect deleted files anyway.
How do music management programs work? Surely they have the same issue.
