I suppose it's an IMAP account. Try Edit->Preferences->Mail Accounts-
<the account>->Edit->Receiving Options->Show only subscribed folders
option.

I tried that and it seems to maintain the unsubscribed folders hidden.
However, apparently I cannot − this probably only makes sense − be
unsubscribed from a folder and simultaneously store messages in it.
Because when I unsubscribe from a folder it will automatically switch
the default folder to “on this computer/folder”.
Meaning there seems to be no way to just “hide” folders − I must
unsubscribe from them.
