Thank you all for suggestions,
I have tried out maildir as well now and this seems to be the way to go.
I assume then that I can attach/detach the this "archive" as needed.
Is it okay to just movew the whole folder to my NAS?
I do see that it creates a lot of hidden files and folders on my HD.
Any obstacles, permissions or other issues to be aware of when moving the whole set of folders?
as a side note, I never send anything from this archive (if so then only to myself) but a couple of times a year I might be seraching or copying something from old cases in the archive.
Maybe email should be optional or be on the same page as choosing the account.
(At least to me it would have been more clear that I had all these options (mbox, maildir etc) to start with)

Hi,
you might be better with Maildir, than with MBOX/Spool, especially when
it's such large archive. That lets you copy folder structure as well
(only Spool directory can work with the directory).
With respect of the email need, I think it's logic, to identify
yourself/account, even it's more important for the sending part (which
you might have set to None for this account), than for the receiving
part. Still it's used to recognize you in the recipients, which is
important in replies and such.
Bye,
Milan
