OK. Sorry, my psychic powers aren't up to scratch this morning.

Well the message list is the format that classic view uses. It means
there's probably some configuration option that has been inadvertently
set.

If you go to View->Current View what is highlighted? It should be "For
Wide View" if you are using vertical view.
