Perhaps I should have been more explicit in describing our usage 

protocols. We treat our desktops as the default email repositories, 

and all of our mobile devices, without exception, are consequently 

optioned to *not* delete anything from the server. In practice, 

we also delete everything read on a mobile, knowing that it will still

be downloadable to the desktops when we return home.  I can see that the

one thing IMAP might be useful for is having a record on the desktop

of replies that were made from the mobiles, but our volume of that sort

of thing is small enough, and the usual content inconsequential enough,

that I'm not sure it would be  worth changing for.
