Sorry, I'm going to top post this.

I have never had an issue with the performance of Gnome. I have never
heard of a serious performance issue with Gnome other than with
seriously underpowered machines.  I run Gnome under Fedora on a Core
Duo laptop with 2Gb memory without too many problems. The OP has a quad
core hyperthreaded 2.2GHz i7 processor - that is not going to break a
sweat running Gnome.

I think it is plain wrong to spread FUD about Gnome performance, it is
plain wrong to say that "a lot of machines can't run GNOME at all", it
is plain wrong to say that "it requires a high level of 3D
acceleration".  And that's not just apocryphal stories - I look after
about 150 Linux desktops, they are varying specifications ranging from
ancient Core2Duo to top end Xeon and with graphics ranging from
integrated Intel to nVidia Tesla - they ALL run Gnome and the users
don't complain.
