Ah, sorry; I assumed it didn't matter as long as Evo's searching the 
messages on local disk.  Guess I shouldn't assume.

It's an Exchange EWS account.

I see similar slowness with an IMAP account.  But on further 
investigation, you're correct that it's not my laptop that's working 
hard; it's the server (which does not have full-text indexing 
configured).
