I've found a temporary work-around in unhiding the .kde directory and setting the KDEHOME env var accordingly.

Yeah, $XDG_DATA_HOME, $XDG_CACHE_HOME and $XDG_CONFIG_HOME are trusted.
For the record I first tried moving it into one of the XDG dirs, but that doesn't work:

Maybe because of the second hidden directory in the path?
