It's a while since I looked at birthdays functionality (I have a wife
that is better at reminding me :-) ) - but I didn't think it was a
normal calendar, I thought it took the birthdays from the contacts
entries that have a birthday listed in them.  So, try filling in the
birthday info for a contact under the "Personal Information" tab when
editing the contact and see if the reminder works.
