(Historically) lines beginning with From separates mail, thus From's in
the mailbody needs to be prepended with a '>' to indicate that it is not
the beginning of a new mail.
Well, that's certainly helpful. I presume, then, this is mentioned in an
RFC somewhere... ?
I don't know about an RFC, but it's certainly a requirement of the mbox
format. RFC's are usually only for intercommunication between
computers, this is a requirement of the internal interoperability
between programs within a computer. More information is in the
