Ron, Why cron? Fetchmail has a perfect timing mechanism itself.
Personal preference. By using cron to execute a shell script to run fetchmail, I'm able to do: if [ -e /tmp/.backup.LOCK ]; then exit 0; fi Thus, one can "pause" fetchmail without having to use su or sudo to stop the daemon.
However, this doesn't solve his problem as he wants to look at the headers and discard messages he doesn't want (I presume). Only with imap is it possible to look at the headers and discard the unwanted mail (from the server).
I guess OP needs to be a bit more specific about what he wants.

Is this possible ?No. The work-around is to use something like fetchmail and cron to retrieve mail from POP on a regular basis throughout the day.
