just post the output of "more ~/.gconf/GNOME/Spell/%gconf.xml" :-)
hmm. perhaps it would be easier to use an editor like "gconf-editor".
OK, here is what I got:

I've had the same problems as (the other) Kelly. At a colleagues
suggestion I shutdown Evolution, blew away the /GNOME/Spell/%gconf.xml
file, and logged out. When I logged back in and started Evolution, the
%gconf.xml file was recreated and spellcheck worked.

OK, I tried this and it worked! (Simply logging out of kelly and logging back in and
restarting Evo didn't work - I had to shut down and re-boot, too).
