You know, you will not believe it, but just this morning before I got
this email, I did exactly same steps as described in the link. And yes!
as of this morning I have my spelling back! I am happy camper now!!
Thank you!

Don't know for sure if this is related or what you are looking for but
this is what I had to do in evolution to get spelling to work. Like
yourself I had all packages installed but I could not get spell checking
to work.

As it states this is not a fix as you can not add any 'user defined'
words (hangs the entire system hard) but it will do basic spell
checking.

I added gtkspell as it was not on originaly. Now it looks like this:
enady igrushka:~> rpm -qa|grep spell| sort
aspell-0.50.5-40
aspell-en-0.51.1-2
gnome-spell-0.5-248
gnome-spell2-1.0.5-218
gtkspell-2.0.5-58
ispell-3.2.06-460
ispell-american-3.2.06-460
ispell-british-3.2.06-460
myspell-american-20040623-2
myspell-british-20040208-28
still no langs listed in the spell options window.
FWIW, this seems to be a SuSE bug, as you are both running SuSE and
observed the same issue.
aspell, aspell-$LANG, gnome-spell >= 1.0.x should be sufficient for a
working spell checker. Evolution depends on this packages for spell
checking.
