Have you tried to blow out all the directories in the /tmp pertaining to
this user, as well as the ones in /var and all the gconf or gnome
directories under that user's ~/home directory?

The only thing I haven't tried is to purge /var : /tmp is cleaned at reboot,
and I've tried to remove all files from my ~/ directory.

I'll see when I'm back at home if there is anything special in /var

Just be careful of what you delete in the /var directory - in not
knowing your distro, I can't really state what's in there!
