This plus all of the other suggestions would be possible if templates were available, like the ones I got used to in The Bat, a shareware client for Windows. Separate templates can be configured for new messages, replies, and forwards. You can configure the first line, whether or not to have quotes, where to put the cursor in relation to the quotations, and your signature.Wow, that leads me to a really nice option. Configuring that first line would really kick as (mentioned some times in here).
