I've already thanked Dan for his response, and everyone can just
disregard this thread now.  After getting desperate last night I removed
everything that was legitimately supposed to have that symbol in it, and
did a recursive grep on /usr for it, which turned up a misplaced
libemiscwidgets.a that some previous build (Mar 5 apparently) had lodged
into /usr/lib about a week and some days before I finished tweaking my
build scripts to remount /usr as read-only during the package build
phase.
