Actually, since all script signatures are apparently treated as HTML,
you would probably want to add "<br>-- <br>" at the beginning of the
script.

I tested this (IMHO after your first post) myself and encountered the
same behavior.
Seems to be a bug -- it ought to be added in both cases. File a Bug
Report, if there isnt already any.
As a quick workaround for being standard compliant your script can add
the string "\n-- \n" at the beginning.
(As I remember, Version 1.0.8 did not add that, if it was in your
signature file. So it even may be save to add it, when that bug is
fixed.)
