I found the soultion to my problem.
I found a couple of stale lock files in various .gnome directories.
after running "killev", check the folloing directories:
.gnome
.gconf
.gconfd
I deleted all of the lock files with dates older than todays date.
Rebooted the machine, started Evolution and everything was back!
