Well I don't know where to take it from here. Maybe someone else can
help now that you've given more information. Did you a do an oaf-slay
after removing the /tmp files?
There's a shell setting, I believe you do "export CAMEL_DEBUG_VERBOSE=1"
and then run evolution-mail in a terminal. It will tell you more
information. When you do this you should run evolution-mail FIRST, when
no other Evo parts are running, and THEN run evolution.

great suggestion. running evolution from the terminal showed two errors:
evolution-shell-WARNING **: Error setting owner on component
OAFIID:GNOME_Evolution_Mail_ShellComponent, -- CORBA error
evolution-shell-WARNING **: Error changing interactive status of component
OAFIID:GNOME_Evolution_Mail_ShellComponent to TRUE --
IDL:omg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE
i typed this into Google and found a page at
http://lists.ximian.com/archives/public/evolution/2001-December/015644.html
which recommended changing the file permissions on the 1.2 folder
cd /usr/lib/evolution/camel-providers
[i used => cd /opt/gnome/lib/evolution/]
chmod go+rx 1.0
[i used -> chmod go+rx 1.2]
killev; oaf-slay
evolution
still didn't work.
then i found a 2nd suggestion on the same google page
http://lists.helixcode.com/archives/public/evolution/2001-December.txt
which recommended removing the "/tmp/orbit*" files. i did and now...i get a
"Fatal Applicaiton Error - could not start "evolution-mail".
Thanks for your on-going assistance,
Noel

Maybe if you killev, go to a terminal window, and run "evolution", you
will find some clues that will help you (or someone on the list) figure
out what's gone wrong. Must be something simple.

Thanks for responding.
I'm running the full Ximian desktop on SuSE 8.0. According to redcarpet
and YaST2, i'm all up-to-date and i think i have all the necessary
packages.
i ran "oaf-slay" without any changes.

What GNU/linux distribution are you using? Do you have the full Ximian
desktop installed, or just the minimum packages required by Evolution
(and are you sure you have those?)?
Do you get any error messages if you run evolution from a terminal
window?
You tried killev, now try "oaf-slay"
Just some ideas...

Suddenly I can't use Evolution for email:
- no mail settings come in in Tools->Settings
- send/receive doesn't work
- i can't view the contents of my inbox or other folders
the mail problem was not fixed by upgrading to 1.2.1
any suggestions?
Yes, have you tried "killev" and restarting Evolution?
