Well, it turned out that I had ISO8859-9 picked instead of ISO8859-1 in the gnomecc. But switching to ISO8859-1 still did not fix the problem. Maybe it has something to with the fact that the text of "To:" needs to be in bold. That's how it is in Evolution on my work machine where everything seems OK.
I am using Helvetica 14 for variable and Courier 12 for fixed width.
