Actually, I'm on a multiuser box (and thus cannot give those write 
permissions).  I know that I risk major mbox corruption (especially since I 
use fetchmail as an automated daemon) but there is nothing else that I can 
think to do to safely retrieve my mail.   BTW, don't lock files normally go 
in the /var/lock folder instead of the /var/spool/mail.
