This sounds like it *might* be an issue with Gnome's [whutever]Conf.sh
files. For instance, if you're building source with prefix /usr/local/ but,
say, your Gnome libs are under /usr/lib, then unless you change an
environmental var, oafConf.sh (in your example) won't be found. So you might
try
# export GNOMEDIR = $GNOMEDIR:/usr/local (have I got that right gang?)
Building this thing has always been a challenge. Don't let it get you down!
The environment variable is actually GNOME_PATH.
